| Law 1 - Make
your text easy to read
Never set your text area to 100% of the page. When viewed with very
high resolution, the text becomes almost unbearable to read. Set
a table to either a fixed width of 760 pixels wide or a percentage
of the screen. Also, consider your audience and determine whether
or not your text size is too big or too small.
Law 2 - Using dark backgrounds
Never have the majority of your text appear as a light color against
a dark background. This is very hard for most people to read and
actually can cause damage to the eye over time. If you must use
a dark background for your page, create a table with a light colored
background and use dark text over that.
Law 3 - Be a stickler about consistency
Never use more than one font for a site. Feel free to make some
text larger than other text for emphasis but never use more than
one font.
Never move your navigation. Your visitors will find their experience
to be much easier if you place the main navigation in the same area
time and time again.
Law 4 - Don't get fancy shmancy
Never use fancy scripts and tricks just because you can. The more
complexity you add to your pages, the larger they get and the more
chances for failure. Try to design your pages as simplistically
as possible.
Never use sound unless there is a reason and there is a way to
turn it off. Better yet, let your visitors decide whether they want
the sound or not.
Flash can be very effective and useful, however consider if it
is necessary to the overall experience of your website. Many visitors
will have to wait while your Flash movie loads and by the time it
does load, it had better been worth it.
Law 5 - Use clean, vivid images
Never use weak, blurry images. Nothing says amateur more than bad
images.
Law 6 - Check and double-check
Never publish your site with broken links or misspelled words. Small
details can slowly eat away at your credibility.
Law 7 - The road to nowhere and under construction
Never mislead your visitors with links that don't take them where
they want to go or pages that are "under construction."
These are a big waste of time and get very frustrating.
