Consultants can be an interesting breed. They can have bigger than normal egos and not like the commitment of working at full-time, 9 - 5 job. Full-time jobs require a team player attitude and a desire to see the organization succeed. Consultants are usually only asked for a partial commitment and really couldn't care a less about your business.

This is the worse case scenario, of course. There are consultants that work very hard for their clients in hopes that they will establish a solid reputation and earn referral business. Sometimes these individuals choose the consultant lifestyle because it affords more freedom; they can work from home and set their own schedule.

It is important that you keep these different personalities in your mind when you are selecting someone to work with. A rogue consultant can set your business up for failure by not taking pride in his/her work and by not designing for the future. Make sure you communicate about your future goals so that they are figured into the overall design whether it be your front end web navigation, back end database schema or network architecture.
